Design Process

Site survey.

Briefing meeting, site survey and site assessment

The design process begins with a briefing meeting with you to understand your needs, wants, likes and dislikes for the garden, and budget to create the new garden. This is followed by a survey and assessment of the site to understand the opportunities and constraints. I suggest in most cases that a full topographical survey is conducted by a professional surveyor. The assessment includes taking photographs of the site, assessing the soil, sun/shade and microclimate in the garden, and considering the location of existing structures, utilities, trees and plants.

A detailed map of a garden or outdoor space layout, featuring pathways, trees, structures, water features, seating areas, and garden beds, with labels indicating different sections and features.

Concept plan

A 2D computer-generated concept plan is prepared to demonstrate the initial idea for the garden layout, including some initial suggestions of materials and key features. An accompanying mood board provides images to show the look and feel of the proposed design, and to help explain the concept ideas. This is followed by a meeting to go through these and discuss any revisions with you.

Working plan

A 2D computer-generated working plan detailing the design for the garden is created which includes the details a landscaper requires to price and build the design. An accompanying material selection photo board shows the chosen hard landscape, soft landscape and garden features. This is followed by a meeting to go through these and discuss any revisions with you.

A detailed planting plan labeled with abbreviations and colour-coded.

Planting plan

A planting plan is prepared detailing all the plants to be used, their sizes, locations and quantities. Plants are selected to suit your garden’s microclimate, soil, sun/shade and style, whilst also considering your preferences and tastes. Alongside this a plant selection photo board will be created so you can identify all the plants to be placed in your garden. This is followed by a meeting to go through these and discuss any revisions with you. When the planting plan is finalised, a plant maintenance guide is prepared to assist you with the planting up and maintenance of your plants through the year.

Additional stages

Additional stages can be included if, for example, lighting, irrigation, sculptures, bespoke structures or specialist water features are required. I would work with specialists to create these for you.

Planting design only

For planting design the stages are very similar as a full garden design, but typically the working plan stage is not required.

About

I am passionate about creating outdoor spaces for people to enjoy. My designs are led by your wants and needs for the garden, alongside the demands and opportunities of the site.

I originally studied for a degree in Biology and have been working in medical research for the last 15 years, after which I changed career path to pursue a more creative career that incorporated my interest in horticulture. I am currently studying for my Postgraduate Diploma in Garden Design at the British Academy of Garden Design.

I am based near Cambridge and generally design in the Cambridgeshire area. However, projects in other parts of the UK may be considered.

Please do get in touch, I look forward to hearing from you and seeing if I can help with your garden.

FAQs

Do you build the gardens?

The garden will need to be built by a landscaper who you contract directly with. I provide the plans for the landscaper to price the work and build from.

Do you plant the gardens?

The plants will need to be purchased and planted by you or a gardener/horticulturist who you contract directly with (except for the containers and pots planting package). I provide guides on how to plant and maintain the planting for your use.

Do you maintain the planting in gardens after they are built?

I am able to maintain planting in some of the gardens that I design, depending on availability and location, so this could be discussed as a possible option. I also offer seasonal maintenance guidance sessions for gardens that I design, where I can guide you through in person how to care for your plants throughout the year.

Which areas of the country do you work in?

I am based near Cambridge and generally design in the Cambridgeshire area. However, projects in other parts of the UK may be considered, so please get in touch.
